GET BUSINESS DONE WITH A SIDE ORDER OF GASTRONOMY -COURTESY OF LUKE DALE ROBERTS

South Africa, Johannesburg, 2 June 2023; South Africa’s restaurateur and multi award winning chef Luke Dale Roberts is bringing back the business lunch to the country’s culinary scene and there’s no better address than The Shortmarket Club to kick this rejuvenated trend into high gear.

Ideally located in the heart of Dunkeld, Johannesburg, at the mixed-use Oxford Parks development, The Shortmarket Club now offers a meaty business lunch menu that boasts an array of flavours the establishment is renowned for. “After moving Shortmarket Club from its original location on Shortmarket Street in Cape Town to its great address here Joburg, we wanted to create an awesome bistro-style offering and ambience,” shares Luke Dale Roberts. “Joburg is South Africa’s financial capital and people here do business comfortably around a  lunch table. We’re only delighted to serve!”.

The Shortmarket Club Business Lunch Menu offers three courses with either a wine pairing sourced from a distinguished Cape estate or a draught of Stella Artois. The wine pairing changes every two months, with the renowned Vergelegen Wine Estate complementing weekday lunches during June and July.

Patrons are advised to arrive hungry, and ready to impress fellow business colleagues. For Starters, Taryn Smith, Head Chef of the cosmopolitan eatery includes a Buttermilk Hake Roti, complete with pickled red onion, chilli XO, lime mayo and coriander shoots, presented on a roti. For those desiring a more traditional starter, yet still packed with experimental flavours, as has come to be expected from The Shortmarket Club, the Deboned Chicken Wing ticks all the piquant boxes. Think sriracha mayo, red cabbage salad and ponzu emulsion. For those seeking a quintessential Shortmarket Club starter, the crispy calamari, yuzu emulsion and burnt honey glaze, presented as the Japanese Pancake, will delightfully kickstart your culinary journey.

“Patrons are invited to explore new flavours while the surroundings remain true to the bistro aesthetic,” continues Taryn. And the chef does not disappoint when it comes to mains either. The Crispy Chickpea Salad with charred romaine, chicken breast, dill and feta dressing is lavishly finished with salted cucumber. The Tomato Tagliatelle, ideal for the winter months in Johannesburg, sees roasted tomato cream, bocconcini, baby spinach and semi-dehydrated tomatoes combine to create what must be the perfect comfort food. The experimental diner will enjoy the Japanese Pork Belly, consisting of Japanese beer jus, lemon glaze and lemon verbena, complemented by a chilli peanut butter.

Finalise the deal-making with something a little sweet including a trio of coconut, caramel and popcorn ice cream or a trio of sorbet.

The Shortmarket Club experience begins long before you arrive at the eatery, as the light bulb sign welcomes the eager patron along the Oxford Road approach. Crossing the branded bespoke bronze manhole cover created by Otto du Plessis of Bronze Age and set into a checkerboard floor, The Short Market Club is welcoming with its opulent, old-world feel. It is the type of place that encourages business colleagues and associates to linger long after the last plate has been cleared; where lunch turns into drinks or an after-work drinks turns into an unhurried dinner.

The space has been designed to celebrate the feel of a private members club, aided by the use of warm leathers and textured woods throughout whilst a magnificent stained glass window creates a unique focal point. The use of deep blacks and layered aubergine hues impart a distinct atmosphere to the eatery.

The three-course Business Lunch Menu at The Shortmarket Club, with two glasses of Vergelegen wines or two Stella Artois draughts, is priced at R350, with a two-course option available, including one glass of Vergelegen wine or one Stella Artois draught, priced at R280.
